Drive-In & Drive-Through Racking System
Drive-In & Drive-Through Racking System
High-density pallet storage solution designed for warehouses and cold storage facilities that require maximum space utilization and efficient bulk pallet handling.
Product Overview
Drive-in and drive-through racking systems are high-density pallet storage solutions designed for warehouses storing large volumes of the same or similar products.
In a drive-in system, forklifts enter the rack structure from one side and load or unload pallets on support rails according to the last-in, first-out (LIFO) principle.
In a drive-through system, forklifts can access the rack from both sides, allowing pallets to flow through the system and supporting first-in, first-out (FIFO) operations.
Both systems eliminate conventional aisles and use deep-lane storage to significantly increase storage capacity within the same warehouse footprint. They are widely used in cold storage, food and beverage distribution, and high-volume pallet warehouses.
Drive-In vs Drive-Through – Key Differences
| Item | Drive-In Racking | Drive-Through Racking |
|---|---|---|
| Forklift access | One-side entry | Two-side entry |
| Working principle | LIFO | FIFO |
| Aisle configuration | Closed at the back | Open at both ends |
| Inventory flow | Suitable for batch storage | Suitable for stock rotation |
| Typical use | Buffer and bulk storage | Distribution and fast-turnover storage |
Key Features
- High-density deep-lane storage structure to minimize aisle space
- Heavy-duty upright frames designed for industrial pallet loads
- High-strength pallet support rails for stable and secure pallet positioning
- Integrated guide rails to assist forklift entry and movement
- Flexible lane depth and rail level configuration
- Compatible with standard reach trucks and counterbalance forklifts

Advantages and Disadvantages
Advantages
- Maximizes warehouse storage density and usable floor area
- Significantly reduces aisle requirements compared with selective pallet racking systems
- Ideal for large quantities of identical or similar SKUs
- Very suitable for cold storage and freezer environments
- Competitive cost per pallet position for high-density projects
Disadvantages
- Limited direct access to individual pallets
- Lower picking flexibility compared with selective racking systems
- Not suitable for warehouses with many mixed or fast-changing SKUs
- Requires trained forklift operation inside rack lanes
Typical Applications
- Cold storage and freezer warehouses
- Food and beverage distribution centers
- FMCG and packaged goods warehouses
- Manufacturing buffer and finished-goods storage
- Third-party logistics (3PL) facilities handling bulk pallet loads

Cost of Drive-In & Drive-Through Racking System
What affects the cost?
- Warehouse size and rack layout
- Number of pallet positions
- Pallet dimensions and pallet weight
- Rack height and lane depth
- Steel thickness and load rating
- Safety and protection accessories
- Installation requirements and project location
Cost positioning
Compared with other pallet storage solutions, drive-in and drive-through racking systems generally offer a lower cost per pallet position than selective pallet racking when very high storage density is required, and are significantly more economical than automated shuttle or AS/RS systems.
They are one of the most cost-effective solutions for bulk pallet storage and cold storage projects.
