Choosing a Cantilever Rack Shelf
The cantilever rack shelf is a specialized warehouse storage solution for long, bulky, and oddly shaped materials like furniture, steel bars, pipes, and lumber.cantilever rack shelf It also provides a storage option for products that can’t be palletized such as plumbing supplies, metal tubing, and drywall sheets. Cantilever racking can be found in lumber yards, shipping and receiving centers, and cold storage facilities as well as other industrial applications.
The system is comprised of three basic components: arms, upright columns, and bases.cantilever rack shelf The upright columns are extremely strong vertical posts that hold the arms, which extend from them and store inventory. The arms are adjustable, giving the ability to store a variety of load sizes and shapes. The base distributes the weight of the stored material over a large area to avoid damage to the system and floor.
When choosing a cantilever rack, the first thing you must consider is what size of load it will be storing.cantilever rack shelf You must also determine how far the arms are able to extend from the upright column. This information will help you design the proper number of arms and upright columns required for your application.
Once you’ve determined the length and height of the load, you can calculate the needed capacity of the cantilever arm by multiplying that value by the number of arms per side. Next, you must choose between a single-sided or double-sided cantilever rack depending on your warehouse space and aisle availability. Single-sided cantilever racks offer direct pick access from one side and are assembled against a wall, while double-sided cantilever racks provide two aisles of direct pick access, back to back.
To prevent the lateral stability of the cantilever rack from being compromised, the arms are secured with rugged brace sets that bolt between pairs of uprights. The width of the brace is calculated by measuring from the midline of one upright to the centerline of the next, with the desired arm spacing between loads being calculated as well.
A cantilever rack must be carefully loaded to ensure that it will not deflect under load. Incorrect loading techniques can result in damage to the equipment and the load itself. To protect the structure of your racking system and to ensure that the arms are rated for their intended load capacities, it is important to properly support the ends of your load with wooden blocks as shown in Figure B1.
The flanges on cantilever rack shelves can face either up or down, allowing them to accommodate a variety of electronic equipment needs. Additionally, equipment strap slots are located along the edge of each shelf to allow for the securement of items to the rack using nylon or polypropylene straps.
With its unique design and heavy-duty construction, the cantilever rack is an excellent choice for a wide variety of industries. By improving warehouse efficiency, reducing handling time for long loads, and making it easier to locate and retrieve inventory, this storage solution can help your company save money and improve productivity.
