Factors to Consider When Choosing Dock Levelers

In the warehouse industry, dock levelers are one of the most critical pieces of equipment.dock levelers They bridge the gap between warehouse floors and transport vehicles to make transferring cargo easier and safer for employees and equipment. At Authority Dock & Door, we know that these vital safety devices are responsible for helping warehouses achieve high productivity and efficiency, which is why we’re dedicated to ensuring that you choose the right dock leveler for your needs.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a dock leveler, but the main consideration is the volume of vehicles that will be using it.dock levelers In order to operate efficiently, dock levelers should be able to accommodate a range of trucks and trailers. Additionally, they should be able to support the maximum load capacity of the warehouse. Lastly, they should be built to withstand the environmental conditions in which they will be used, as harsh weather can affect their performance.

Load Capacity

The capacity of a dock ramp is based on the weight that can be supported by it, and varies depending on the construction material and the vehicle type. For example, a hydraulic dock leveler may have a higher load capacity than a mechanical model, but both can operate effectively in most applications.

Similarly, the width of the dock ramp can impact its ability to accommodate different vehicles. Wider ramps allow forklifts and pallet jacks to move across them without catching on the lip or having to reach over it, which improves worker safety and efficiency. They are also better suited to accommodating side-by-side pallet arrangements in refrigerated truck and trailer applications.

The lip of a dock ramp is another important factor to consider, and must be sized properly to meet the requirements of the vehicles it will be servicing. For instance, ANSI MH30.1 requires that the lip extend at least 4 in. past the truck bumpers, while some companies require a longer lip to accommodate recessed dock levelers, setback internal trailer beds and other vehicle-specific features.

Dock Ramp Activation System

Depending on the application and installation requirements, some dock levelers can be activated manually or electronically. Mechanical models use springs or air bladders to raise the deck assembly and lip, while electronic systems can be powered by electricity or hydraulics. The choice of an activation system should be based on the desired level of control and the environmental conditions in which the dock leveler will be used.

Dock Bumpers

Often overlooked, dock bumpers are an important safety feature that shields the building, dock leveler and transport vehicle from contact or damage. They are typically made of rubber and are positioned on each side of the loading dock, with dimensions and projections varying based on factors like the vehicles being serviced and the driveway slope. They can also be augmented with other safety features, including dock warning lights and alarms, to help reduce the risk of accidents.
