How Much Space Do You Need Between Pallet Racks
When planning a warehouse layout, understanding how much space you need between pallet racks is essential for safety, efficiency, and compliance. The spacing between pallet racks affects the movement of forklifts, accessibility to stored goods, and overall workflow. Several factors influence the required aisle width, including the type of forklift used, the dimensions of the pallets, and the layout of your storage system.
In general, standard aisle spacing for pallet racking systems typically ranges from 3 to 13 feet (0.9 to 4 meters). For warehouses using standard counterbalance forklifts, an aisle width of about 12 feet (3.6 meters) is recommended. This allows enough room for the forklift to maneuver safely and access pallets without damaging the racks. On the other hand, if you're using narrow aisle or very narrow aisle forklifts, the space between pallet racks can be reduced to as little as 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters), significantly increasing storage density.
You should also consider fire code regulations and safety standards, which may require specific clearances for emergency access and ventilation. In high-density storage areas, tighter aisle spacing might improve capacity but could reduce operational efficiency and increase the risk of accidents. It’s also important to leave enough clearance above pallets to allow for safe lifting and placement.
Ultimately, the space between pallet racks should be determined by a balance between maximizing storage capacity and ensuring safe, efficient movement throughout the warehouse. Consulting with a warehouse design expert can help you determine the ideal configuration based on your equipment and operational needs.
