Push-Back Racking System in Warehouse Is Used For
A push-back racking system is a type of high-density pallet storage solution commonly used in warehouses where space optimization and operational efficiency are key priorities. This system is designed to allow multiple pallets to be stored in a single lane, stacked one behind the other on carts that move along inclined rails. When a new pallet is loaded, it pushes the previously loaded pallet(s) backward. When a pallet is removed, the remaining pallets automatically slide forward due to gravity, making the next pallet readily available at the front.

This racking system operates on a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) principle, which means the last pallet placed into the lane is the first to be retrieved. It is especially useful for storing homogeneous products—pallets containing the same SKU (stock keeping unit)—that do not require strict FIFO (First-In, First-Out) inventory rotation.
One of the main advantages of push-back racking is its ability to maximize storage capacity without compromising accessibility. It allows for deep lane storage, often accommodating up to 6 pallets deep, while still enabling easy access from a single aisle. This reduces the number of forklift aisles required, increasing the overall storage density of the warehouse.
In addition, push-back racks improve warehouse productivity by reducing loading and retrieval times, since forklifts only need to operate from the front of the rack. This design also enhances safety, as forklift operators don’t need to drive into the rack structure, unlike in drive-in racking systems.
Overall, push-back racking systems are ideal for warehouses with limited space, high throughput, and medium-turnover inventory.
